Thoughts on Pride Month

Thoughts on Pride Month

June is Pride Month. Gender identity and sexual orientation are relevant, important issues impacting many lives, causing much conflict and hurt inside and outside the Church.

The Bible clearly teaches that homosexuality is sin and against God's purpose, as is any sex outside of the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman. But many Christians face social pressure from peers, coworkers, or family members to support unbiblical sexual behavior, the homosexual lifestyle, and Pride Month. This results in great personal and relational distress for many inside the church.

As followers of King Jesus, how should we respond?  Here are some suggestions:

  1. Remind yourself of your identity in Christ.
    (1 Peter 2:9-12, 1 John 4:9-12)
Having someone challenge or confront your beliefs can be upsetting or feel threatening. But we must also be on guard against our own proud and self-righteous hearts and not judge others (Romans 2:1). Thankfully, God has patience with us, and His kindness leads us to repentance (Romans 2:3-4).

  2. Remind yourself of the Gospel.
    (1 Corinthians 6:9-11, 1 Corinthians 9:22-23)
The biblical basis for anyone’s acceptance before God is Christ’s death on the cross. Those of us who have accepted Christ as our Savior experience God’s forgiveness and grace. We must seek to address any immorality in our hearts, including what happens in our thoughts (Matthew 5:28). Then we can share the message of forgiveness and grace experienced through faith in Jesus with others, including those voicing their support for Pride Month (Matthew 5:44-45).

  3. Be aware of the personal complexity and cost of this issue.
    (Matthew 5:13-16)
The Bible is clear that homosexuality is sin, and we must teach that truth in our churches. We must also engage compassionately with Christian brothers and sisters who struggle with this sin, knowing that we all struggle with sin. Outside the church, this issue becomes more complex and requires an even more nuanced response. God calls us to be salt and light, and we must do so in love. Building or maintaining relationships with people who support Pride Month allows us to have the greatest impact on them.

During my time in the business world, I saw how difficult it can be for Christians to live out their beliefs during Pride Month. In response, I wrote a series of devotionals for Christians in the workplace facing these issues. If you are interested in these resources or have any other questions, please let us know.
